Breaking Barriers: How a Single Mother Built a Business Through Vocational Training

At 28, Grace Nakato was struggling to provide for her three children. After her husband abandoned the family, Grace took on odd jobs to make ends meet, but it was never enough. “I felt like I was failing my children,” she says.

Everything changed when Grace heard about VOGAfrica’s vocational training program. She enrolled in a tailoring course, determined to turn her life around. “I didn’t know how to even thread a needle when I started,” Grace recalls with a smile. “But the trainers were patient, and I was determined to learn.”

Six months later, Grace graduated with a sewing machine provided by VOGAfrica. She started a small tailoring business from her home, making school uniforms and dresses for her community. “I can now pay my children’s school fees and provide for my family,” she says proudly.

Grace’s success has inspired other women in her community to pursue vocational training. “I tell them, if I can do it, so can you,” she says.

Grace’s story is just one of many. Through our vocational training programs, VOGAfrica has empowered hundreds of women like Grace to break the cycle of poverty and build better lives for themselves and their families.
