From Survivor to Advocate: How Sarah is Fighting Gender-Based Violence

Sarah Nalubega, a 32-year-old mother of two from Mukono District, never imagined she would become a voice for change in her community. For years, Sarah endured domestic violence at the hands of her husband. “I felt trapped,” she recalls. “I didn’t know where to turn or who to trust.”

Sarah’s breaking point came when her husband’s abuse began to affect her children. “I knew I had to do something, but I didn’t know how,” she says. One day, while visiting a local market, Sarah saw a poster for VOGAfrica’s support group for survivors of gender-based violence. She decided to attend, and it changed her life.

At the support group, Sarah found a safe space to share her story and connect with other women who had faced similar struggles. “For the first time, I realized I wasn’t alone,” she says. VOGAfrica provided Sarah with counseling, legal support, and training in entrepreneurship. With their help, she started a small business selling vegetables at the market.

Today, Sarah is not only free from abuse but also a passionate advocate for women’s rights. She leads VOGAfrica’s awareness campaigns in her community, educating women about their rights and connecting them with resources. “I want every woman to know that they deserve respect and safety,” she says.

Sarah’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact of VOGAfrica’s programs. Through her advocacy, she has helped dozens of women escape abusive situations and rebuild their lives.
